Elections in the Kingdom
Yesterday was election day in the kingdom of Morocco. Yes, we have a real monarch with real authority and power, with his royal family. And we have a parliament.
What's it like?
Mini-crowds of youth, dressed in matching t-shirts and caps meandered the streets day and night, shouting and chanting the virtures of their candidates... all while handing out fliers, leaflets, and otherwise throwing paper on the ground, under your door, and on your car.
We don't know much about the candidates personally. There's a picture of them, with their names, and the symbol of their political party. Symbols such as the horse, the dove, the wheat grain, etc. The symbols are to help the voter remember who is who.
The day after elections, the votes are still being counted. 41% turnout, say the newscasters.
Conservatives (Istiqlal) lead the Islamists (Peace and Justice) so far.
Meanwhile, a pile of trash is in front of our house. A pile of crumpled election leaflets and fliers.
