The Road Less Traveled

There is the wide road used by most people of this world and there is the narrow way, the Road Less Traveled. This blog is about experiences, people and places on the narrow path. I lived and worked in North Africa for many years. That is my outer journey. But my inner journey is spiritual, global and universal. In 2012, I moved to the Golden Triangle region of SE Asia (Laos, Myanmar, Thailand). I have started a whole new adventure. Come join me on the Road Less Traveled. Without and within.

Line Cutting

People cut in line in every country. Doesn't matter where you live. People dont' want to wait their turn or they want to be first.

My wife, L was buying vegetables at the local green grocer last week. She was second in line. A lady was weighing her produce at the counter when an older woman reached from behind and stuck her peppers on the weight scale.

"Excuse me," the first woman said. "Please let me finish, first."
L forwarded the comment to the older woman, "She said, 'let her finish'." With that, L curtly took the peppers out of the scale and put them back in line. She was irritated. Who was that old woman? What right does she have to cut in line? Just because she's older?

At that point, the older woman got a call on her cell phone and stepped outside to talk. The first lady finished her business.
L was next. She thought about how mad she was, but that maybe she could be nice. You know, random acts of kindness. She decided to let the old lady go before her. Since that woman was still outside, L weighed the peppers for her. The woman returned.

L turned to her, "Your peppers are weighed already. I did it for you."
The woman said, "Thank you."

Sometimes, a random act of kindness pays dividends. Even to a line cutter?
