Agadir has it's share of 5 star luxury hotels. The beach is famous nationwide. Building continues unabated along the "secteur touristique" which is impressive. This is modern Morocco.
Up the coast about 15 km away, there is Taghazout, a quaint village which will be forever changed by a mammoth luxury resort. In order to make room for this, the developers have demolished local schools, cafes, campgrounds, trees, and parts of villages. The whole character of the place is gone.
The positive side of development is that it will generate jobs. However, a question needs to be asked: how will the environment do? What about the water supply for golf courses and high water usage when we live in a semi-desert area? Can the region really handle this type of heavy luxury resort?
Southern Morocco goes through regular cycles of drought which will surely affect Agadir, as it already has. When water becomes scarce, what will be done? Who gets priority access?
